At every visit we make to one of our commissioned locations, we learn something new. Often, they are new ideas, innovations, and initiatives that we can share with local teams in other places.
We publish our findings in the News Centre and categorise each article as case studies. You can find our latest case studies below, but three notable examples are:
Aberdeen is a beacon for the way it has taken up the ‘place partnership’ approach to tackling vacancy on its central Union Street, particularly with its upper floors study and follow-on initiative. The impact it is having is something that we think other places with unused and underutilised upper floors (as an issue) could draw on for sure.
Crewe is an example of a place that has focused on arts & crafts, creative, culture and community uses in its initial work to tackle town centre vacancy. This is not to say that retail, hospitality, and services have not been part of the story too; they all have and will continue to be. What we call the ‘alternative’ or additional use types, however, are what we focused on to make a start on that road to reduce the number of empty units and build the momentum required to move others forward.
Kirkcaldy town centre had, at the time of our initial ‘audit’, a headline vacancy rate close to double the national average. At the heart of our approach here is creating a positive, proactive, tackling-vacancy-focused ‘place partnership’ with a wider group of stakeholders to focus on this issue. That first visit and subsequent conversations suggest Kirkcaldy is perhaps better placed than many locations to drive this forward.
Tredegar is also tackling vacancy with a slightly different focus, working on ‘look’ initiatives including public realm, street furniture painting and other refresh work, plus creating stunning pieces of wall art. Their aim here is to improve the town centre environment to help attract customers and visitors, and to create a great first impression for new would-be business occupiers and investors.

A catalogue of highstreet comebacks…?
Argos is readying a new standalone store in Crewe town centre. Barclays has opened a new branch in Poole (and two other locations). “Scotland’s second-oldest record store has unveiled plans to open another shop in a town where it began almost 50 years ago, as its owner hails the so-called ‘vinyl revival’.” (The National). Three…

It’s an inspiring community highstreet story but also a really valuable case study for other places to draw on… On Saturday Her-Place Charitable Trust opened their Women’s Centre in Crewe town centre. “This isn’t just a building. It’s a place to belong, grow, connect and feel supported.” In a way just one opening in what…

“A significant milestone” for Tredegar…
So here’s one I think is a really positive tackling town centre vacancy story… We’ll always give local teams we’re working with to reduce the number of empty units and improve the mix of uses in their town or city centre a target: you could halve your headline vacancy rate in 18 months. Some will…

Crewe’s journey learning…
“There’s a really interesting tackling town centre vacancy story emerging here.” When we ran our ‘audit’ in August 2024, Crewe town centre had 24 vacant units out of 141 so a headline vacancy rate of 17% and above the national average which is reported as being around 13.5%. Today – tho there’ve been some more…

I’ve been checking in on this building every time I’ve been in town and watched as the community-led team have slowly, carefully brought it back into play. Now – as you can see from our lead image – it’s no longer purple and not far off being ready to go. It’s one of an encouraging…

Talking Upper Floors…
In London via Oxford to help showcase a pathfinding project from Aberdeen… …but it’s an approach that we reckon could be taken up by many of the town and city centre teams that were represented at the Association of Town & City Management ‘Place Management Conference’. Our part in the ‘Multi-Agency Approach to…’-themed day was…
